James A. Garfield letters to Oliver G. Cope, 1879-1880.

Consists of one autograph letter signed and one letter signed with envelope from James A. Garfield to Oliver G. Cope. The first letter, dated 22 November 1879 from Washington, thanks Cope and his constituents for their support in Garfield's campaign for the U.S. Senate. In the second letter, dated 4 October 1880 from Mentor, Ohio, Garfield discusses a canvass of the voters that has been in progress and comparing it with that of the previous year and expresses his hope that all Republican friends will be at the polls on Election Day.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
